New Year’s Eve countdown specials 2018: Mariah Carey is back. Here’s where to watch.

05:25 Add Comment
Usually, New Year’s Eve countdown specials come and go without much fanfare — unless there’s a real train wreck, such as Mariah Carey’s botched performance last year during ABC’s “New Year’s Rockin’ Eve.” Her representatives blamed technical difficulties and said “production set her up to fail”; the production company called those claims “defamatory, outrageous and frankly absurd.”

Apparently, everyone made up, because Carey returns to ABC on Sunday night: “We can all agree that last year didn’t go exactly as planned and we are thrilled to move forward together,” the two camps said in a statement. Here’s a roundup of all the shows leading the countdown to 2018:

Revelers around the world ring in 2018, say bye to the old

A look at how people around the world are ringing in 2018:

___

NEW ZEALAND

Tens of thousands of New Zealanders took to streets and beaches, becoming among the first in the world to usher in 2018.

As the new year dawned in this southern hemisphere nation, fireworks boomed and crackled above city centers and harbors, and party-goers sang, hugged, danced and kissed.

In Auckland, New Zealand's biggest city, tens of thousands gathered around Sky Tower as five minutes of nonstop pyrotechnics exploded from the structure's upper decks.

But on nearby Waiheke Island, 30 kilometers (20 miles) away, authorities canceled the planned fireworks display because of drought conditions and low water supplies for firefighters.

___

AUSTRALIA

Fireworks lit up the sky above Sydney Harbour a few hours before midnight Sunday, kicking off the city's New Year's celebrations.

Around 1 million people were expected to gather to watch the festivities. Security was tight, but officials said there was no particular alert.

During the midnight fireworks display, a rainbow waterfall off the Sydney Harbour Bridge was planned to celebrate recently passed legislation legalizing gay marriage in Australia.

___

CHINA

Those willing to brave the cold in Beijing will join a countdown at the tower at Yongdingmen Gate, a rebuilt version of the Ming dynasty-era landmark gate at the southern end of the city's north-south axis.

Bells will be rung and prayers offered at temples in Beijing, but the Gregorian calendar's New Year's celebrations are typically muted in China compared to the Lunar New Year, or Spring Festival, a time of fireworks, feasts and family reunions.

Authorities throughout China are also on high alert for stampedes or terror attacks at large public gatherings. Police in the central city of Zhengzhou are putting 3,500 officers on duty across the city while residents gather to watch a light show and cultural performance in a public square.

The official Xinhua News Agency reported that President Xi Jinping sent a New Year's greeting to his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin, saying Beijing is ready to boost cooperation with Russia in 2018.

JAPAN

Many Japanese are celebrating the arrival of the Year of the Dog in the traditional way of praying for peace and good fortune at neighborhood Shinto shrines, and eating New Year's food such as noodles, shrimp and sweet black beans.

Barbecued beef and octopus dumpling stalls were out at Tokyo's Zojoji Temple, where people take turns striking the giant bell 108 times at midnight, an annual practice repeated at other Buddhist temples throughout Japan.

North Korea's nuclear and missile programs cast a shadow over Japan's hopes for peace, said 33-year-old cab driver Masaru Eguchi, who was ready to be busy all night shuttling shrine visitors.

"The world situation has grown so complex," Eguchi said, adding that he also worried about possible terrorism targeting Japan. "I feel this very abstracted sense of uncertainty, although I really have no idea what might happen."

___

SOUTH KOREA

After spending an exhausting year that saw a presidency toppled by a corruption scandal and nuclear-armed North Korea firing missile after missile, South Koreans enter 2018 in need of a happy distraction. The upcoming winter Olympics just might do it.

Thousands of people are expected to fill the streets near Seoul's City Hall for a traditional bell-tolling ceremony to usher in the new year. The group of dignitaries picked to ring the old Bosingak bell at midnight includes Soohorang and Bandabi — the tiger and bear mascots for the Pyeongchang Winter Games and Paralympics in February and March.

Tens of thousands of people are expected to flock to eastern coastal areas, including Gangneung, the seaside city that will host the Olympic skating and hockey events, to watch the sun rise on 2018.

___

INDIA

Security was tight in the southern Indian city of Bangalore to prevent a repeat of incidents of alleged groping and molestation of several women during last year's New Year's Eve celebrations.

Sunil Kumar, the city's police commissioner, said at least 15,000 police officers were on duty and were being aided by drones and additional closed-circuit television cameras.

Last year, police first denied that any sexual harassment had taken place during the celebrations in Bangalore, India's information technology hub. But later, police detained at least six men after several video clips of women being attacked by groups of men spread on social media.

___

PHILIPPINES

Hours before midnight, authorities had already reported that at least 86 people had been injured by celebratory firecrackers in the Philippines, which has some of the most raucous New Year's celebrations in Asia.

Although the number of injuries has tapered off in recent years, largely due to hard economic times and government scare campaigns, the figures remain alarming. President Rodrigo Duterte signed an order in June confining the use of firecrackers to community-designated areas, such as near shopping malls and parks.

Many Filipinos, largely influenced by Chinese tradition, believe that noisy New Year's celebrations drive away evil and misfortune. But they have carried that superstition to extremes, exploding dangerously large firecrackers and firing guns to welcome the new year despite threats of arrest.

___

TURKEY

Security measures were ramped up across Turkey, which was hit by a New Year's attack a year ago that killed dozens.

In Istanbul alone, 37,000 officers were on duty, with multiple streets closed to traffic and large vehicles barred from entering certain districts. Several New Year's Eve street parties were canceled for security reasons.

Early on Jan. 1, 2017, an assailant shot his way into Istanbul's Reina nightclub, where hundreds were celebrating New Year's. Thirty-nine people were killed — mostly foreigners — and 79 wounded. The Islamic State group claimed responsibility.

On Sunday, some 100 people gathered outside the nightclub to remember the victims of the attack.

___

ROMANIA

Romanians prepared to usher in a new year in which the focus is expected to be an anti-corruption fight as the government seeks to push through legislation that critics say will make it harder to punish high-level graft.

Television stations broadcast live from supermarkets full of last-minute shoppers, while beauty salons reported full bookings as revelers geared up for traditional celebrations of copious meals that can run to hundreds of euros (dollars).

Others meditated and prayed at Orthodox churches and monasteries. In rural eastern Romania, villagers danced traditional pantomime-like jigs to welcome the new year, wrapping themselves in bear furs or dressing as horses.

In his New Year message, President Klaus Iohannis praised Romanians who staged the largest protests since the end of communism.

___

LAS VEGAS

Tens of thousands of revelers will ring in the new year in Las Vegas under the close eye of law enforcement just three months after the deadliest mass shooting in modern U.S. history.

Tourism officials expect about 330,000 people to come to Las Vegas for the festivities, which are anchored by a roughly eight-minute fireworks display at the top of seven casino-hotels.

Acts including Bruno Mars, Britney Spears, Celine Dion and the Foo Fighters will keep partiers entertained before and after midnight at properties across Sin City.

The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department will have every officer working Sunday, while the Nevada National Guard is activating about 350 soldiers and airmen.

The federal government also is sending dozens of personnel to assist with intelligence and other efforts.

Amid bitter cold, First Night cancels parade, early fireworks

The extreme cold has led to the cancellation of two popular events for Boston’s New Year’s celebration.

The 6 p.m. parade to Boston Common and the 7 p.m. fireworks on New Year’s Eve have been canceled “in anticipation of the extreme cold conditions,” organizers announced late Saturday night.

The decision followed a “recommendation of public safety,” the announcement said.
The temperature in Boston is expected to be in the teens and single digits Sunday, falling to just 2 degrees by midnight, according to the National Weather Service.

On Monday, the temperature may dip below zero in the early morning, and stay in the single digits throughout the day.

Stage performances scheduled for Copley Square on New Year’s Day from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. were also canceled, organizers said on Twitter.

UPDATE: Due to severe weather conditions, the People’s Procession Parade (6PM), Family Fireworks on Boston Common (7PM), & First Day Copley Square Stage performances on Mon have been canceled. Visit site for info on schedule & press kit: https://www.firstnightboston.org

As of now, fireworks will still be launched over Boston Harbor at midnight to ring in 2018.

Organizers announced Friday that the New Year’s Eve skating show at the Boston Common Frog Pond was canceled because of low temperatures and frostbite warnings, although the rink will remain open for public skating from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Tamar Braxton Claims Ex-Husband Vince Herbert Impregnated Another Woman

03:56 Add Comment

Tamar Braxton has revealed that an unnamed woman recently told her that she is pregnant with Vince Herbert’s child.

The reality TV star posted a cryptic post on her Instagram account, which has been deleted. Braxton, 40, said that the woman contacted her to come clean about her and Herbert’s affair.

According to E! News, Herbert also called Braxton and denied the unnamed woman’s claims about him being the father of her child. But the “Dancing With the Stars” alum said that she knew her ex-husband was lying to her.

“Vincent Herbert is having a baby!” she wrote on social media. Braxton also said that her ex-husband wasn’t supposed to call her because she has been granted protection order against him.

Immediately after Braxton’s shocking revelations, Laura Govan clarified that she’s not Herbert’s “other woman.” The “Basketball Wives LA” star also said that she was never with Herbert and as such, he could never get her pregnant, according to TMZ.

Meanwhile, Braxton filed for divorce from Herbert in October. Herbert was arrested on Christmas Day and was later on released on a $20,000 bond. Initial speculations suggested that Herbert was booked for spousal assault, but Braxton told People that their heated fight did not become physical.

“Co-parenting while going through a divorce is not an easy task. While celebrating the Christmas holiday as a family, after a few drinks and some jealousy, things got a bit out of hand, which is common for most families during the holidays. In the midst of everything our family is going through things got heated and a bit exaggerated,” she said.

Braxton added that he did not appreciate Herbert’s lack of respect for their family, as well as the fact that he got another woman pregnant. But she also cannot paint him as an “abuser” because he isn’t.

“I’m deeply hurt and saddened that this will be how we will remember Christmas 2017, but, my motto is and maintains to be ‘Bluebird of Happiness’ and nobody will stop my joy and blessings going into the New Year,” she concluded.

When is the next full moon? How to see the January supermoons

03:21 Add Comment

2017 might have been a terrible year for some, but for astronomy lovers it was great, with a total solar eclipse and plenty of cosmic goings-on. It looks like in 2018 the skies will be just as busy, kicking off with a supermoon on the first day of the year.

These massive-looking full moons are truly beautiful, and capturing one on camera is the end goal for many a sky-watcher. We’ve been treated to three supermoons in a row, with the first one being at the start of December. However, you can still catch the next two.

What is a supermoon? A supermoon is a full moon that appears to be much bigger than usual. This is because the moon orbits the earth in a an oval shape rather than a circle, making it closer to the earth at some points. Every 29.5 days when it reaches the closes point to the earth this is known as a perigee. Now and again, this perigee will also fall at the same time as a full moon. There are no effects of a supermoon but it looks mesmerising in the sky, appearing around 14% bigger and 30% brighter than your average full moon. Depending on where it is on the horizon it can look even larger, in a trick of the eyes called ‘the moon illusion’.

When are January’s supermoons? We have two supermoons this month, with the first falling on New Year’s Day – this is nicknamed the wolf moon. Then, on January 31st, the so-called blue moon will arrive, which is also a supermoon.

What’s the best way to see a supermoon? You don’t even have to stay up late to view it as the best time to watch a supermoon is just after moonrise when it’s rising up off the horizon. If you’d like to know what time that is for you, check out this moonrise calculator. If it’s still way too chilly for you to even think about venturing outside, Slooh are livestreaming the supermoon too. Technology is wonderful sometimes. Don’t worry, either, as unlike the solar eclipse, you won’t need any special glasses or equipment to look straight at it.

Rylan Clark-Neal Hits Back At Claims He's Been Fired From 'This Morning'

04:21 Add Comment
RYLAN CLARK-NEAL has defended his decision to take a break from This Morning after being hit by comments from Twitter trolls.
The 29-year-old announced he would be taking a short leave of the ITV show earlier this month.

In a since deleted tweet, the former X Factor star posted to his 1.5million fans: “Rumours impress why I’m ‘leaving’ or been ‘axed’ from @thismorning. Truth is I need a break.

WHEN YOU PIT A NICE LITTLE TWEET UP AND PEOPLE PIPE UP..... I’ll just keep it simple....... I’ve not been sacked from @thismorning just having some time off that’s all. Night

“I’ve been working constantly for 5 years and I need some time to myself. I’ll still be at Big Bro[ther]. I just need to take some time to myself.

“That’s all. I’ll be back soon xxx,” he posted.

However, Rylan soon deleted the post after being hit by a barrage of abusive tweets in response to his explanation.
One Twitter user posted: “Great the you get that privilege, majority of people work from age of 16 till they retire!!”(sic)

Another fumed: “Try working 20 years for the NHS we could all do with a break!!”

A third added: “You are leaving because you need a break from work? Try doing a real job for 30yrs, 12hrs a day. Doing a few hours every morning like you do is a piece of cake. Absolute joke, there will be mothers and fathers out there laughing to bits #Lazy.”

Rylan then replaced the seemingly inflammatory tweet with: “WHEN YOU PUT A NICE LITTLE TWEET UP AND PEOPLE PIPE UP… I’ll jus keep it simple… I’ve not been sacked from @thismorning just having some time off that’s all. Night.”

Rylan initially told hosts Philip Schofield and Holly Willoughby: “I’ve not really said anything but after Christmas, next Friday, I’m going to be going away for a little bit.”

He added that is was “definitely not goodbye” and that he would be back in the new year following a short break.

His reassurances weren’t enough for Holly, 36, who lamented: “I feel like you're a child going off travelling to experience things new.

"We’re always here for you, so come back whenever you like.”

Lorde's Israel concert: ambassador to New Zealand asks to meet singer

03:19 Add Comment
Itzhak Gerberg says cancelled performance could have ‘contributed to the spirit of hope and peace in the Middle East’

Israel’s ambassador to New Zealand has invited Lorde to meet him after the singer cancelled her concert in Tel Aviv.

On Christmas Day, Lorde cancelled a concert scheduled for Israel in June after criticism from activists in the Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions (BDS) movement.

Her decision also came after an open letter written by two New Zealand fans on website the Spinoff argued the concert would show support for Israel’s occupation of Palestine.

Israeli ambassador to New Zealand Itzhak Gerberg on Tuesday night extended an invitation to the 21-year-old musician on social media.

In a follow-up statement on Wednesday, he said the musician had “succumbed to the supporters of a small fanatic group” that “spreads hatred and animosity” and that she had disappointed her fans in Israel.

“Your concert in Israel could have spread the message that solutions come from constructive engagement that leads to compromise and cooperation,” Dr Gerberg said.

“Music should unite not divide and your performance in Israel could have contributed to the spirit of hope and peace in the Middle East.”

The Jewish Council of New Zealand earlier said that, in succumbing to pressure to call off the concert, Lorde had made a political statement.

Spokeswoman Juliet Moses said the singer would perform in Russia on her Melodrama tour and that despite that country’s human rights abuses no one called on her to cancel that show.

The Zionist Federation of New Zealand also said it was disappointed Lorde had caved into pressure from “those who wish to see the destruction of Israel”.

“By singling out Israel amongst other nations whose human rights abuses make any that Israel supposedly commit seem a drop in the ocean, shows the double standards and discrimination towards the Jewish state of those in the BDS movement,” the organisation said in a statement.

Laura Dern gets cosy with basketballer Baron Davis

Actress Laura Dern got cosy with basketball player Baron Davis, who is yet to finalise his divorce with actress Jordana Brewster's sister Isabella. Reportedly, donning a long black coat, fishnet leggings and black leather boots, Dern, 50, was photographed kissing Davis on Wednesday.

Davis, who is 12 years younger to Dern, held her handbag during the lunch date. A source said they were "talking, laughing and having a great time."

Dern, who divorced singer Ben Harper in 2013, was "trying to remain incognito," but the pair "were kissing and touching and were all over each other" during the outing, the source added.

Award-winning TV journalist Amanda Davis dies from a stroke on the way to a funeral

02:53 Add Comment
TV anchor Amanda Davis has died at the age of 62 after suffering a stroke. Davis suffered a sudden stroke while waiting to board a flight to her stepfather’s funeral in Texas on Wednesday. The veteran anchor worked at Fox5 Atlanta for 26 years and retired in 2013.

She was also an anchor at CBS46, which she joined in January, who paid tribute to her when the news of her death broke. They said: ‘Her family is asking for privacy at this difficult time. Amanda friends and colleagues at CBS 46 are praying for her family.’ Her colleages also posted tributes to her on social media.

Just last week she shared a photo on Twitter of a bouquet of flowers she had been sent in the wake of her stepfather’s death. She tweeted: ‘Thanks to my GF Debbie Turman for the lovely flowers as I grieve over the loss of my pops. His funeral is the 27th.’

Davis had also shared a Facebook post about celebrating Christmas after losing a loved one. She wrote: ‘Stay strong, keep praising the Lord.’ The Emmy-award winning journalist has spoken openly about her battle with alcoholism in the past in a frank interview with The Atlanta Journal Constitution.

She admitted she ‘questioned’ whether she had alcoholism, as she believed herself to be a ‘social drinker’. ‘I wanted to believe that there was still a way they could help me control it,’ she said.

  1. In total and complete shock right now. Please pray for comfort and peace for Amanda's family. They've been through a lot & need our prayers. Please pray also for all of our family as we deal with the loss of our colleague & friend. Rest In Peace Amanda. 🙏🏽
