Amid bitter cold, First Night cancels parade, early fireworks

The extreme cold has led to the cancellation of two popular events for Boston’s New Year’s celebration.

The 6 p.m. parade to Boston Common and the 7 p.m. fireworks on New Year’s Eve have been canceled “in anticipation of the extreme cold conditions,” organizers announced late Saturday night.

The decision followed a “recommendation of public safety,” the announcement said.
The temperature in Boston is expected to be in the teens and single digits Sunday, falling to just 2 degrees by midnight, according to the National Weather Service.

On Monday, the temperature may dip below zero in the early morning, and stay in the single digits throughout the day.

Stage performances scheduled for Copley Square on New Year’s Day from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. were also canceled, organizers said on Twitter.

UPDATE: Due to severe weather conditions, the People’s Procession Parade (6PM), Family Fireworks on Boston Common (7PM), & First Day Copley Square Stage performances on Mon have been canceled. Visit site for info on schedule & press kit: https://www.firstnightboston.org

As of now, fireworks will still be launched over Boston Harbor at midnight to ring in 2018.

Organizers announced Friday that the New Year’s Eve skating show at the Boston Common Frog Pond was canceled because of low temperatures and frostbite warnings, although the rink will remain open for public skating from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m.
